Winter is coming to an end and in Agrícola Navarro de Haro we have already begun the process of grafting watermelon into pumpkin, a technique used to improve the resistance of watermelon plants to soil diseases and increase the quality and yield of fruits. The process of this practice involves combining the stem of a watermelon plant with the stem of a pumpkin plant. To successfully achieve a beneficial result it is necessary to provide adequate care to plants, including adequate irrigation, sufficient sunlight and protection against pests and diseases.
To improve the process, we combine various plant varieties like barley, sunflowers, corn, and others in the same field. Their diverse functions, such as producing pollen and nectar, help promote the growth and spread of auxiliary insects. These insects play a vital role in the biological control of the most common agricultural pests. In this way, we reduce the dependence on chemical treatments in our fields, sometimes even completely without them.
