Our most eagerly awaited season of the year is beginning and with it our farms are filling up with watermelon plantations. We tell you all about the new season.
At Agrícola Navarro de Haro we always guarantee that our products are harvested at the right time of ripening. With a product such as watermelon, knowing the ripening process of the fruit is essential. Harvesting the fruit too early results in produce that is too green and has little flavour. On the other hand, picking watermelon late spoils the authentic, fresh taste of the fruit. That is why our staff monitors the ripening stages, fertilisation, irrigation and any other necessary corrections on each farm every day. Thus, by monitoring all the climatic and nutritional conditions of the plant, we can perfectly control the time of harvesting.
As far as plantation protection is concerned, at Agrícola Navarro de Haro we are once again committed to biological control in our crops. The use of auxiliary insects reduces the use of chemicals and gives us better pest control. We use certain plants that are planted near the watermelon transplants. These plants serve as shelter or food for the auxiliary fauna in the crops. In this way we anticipate the appearance of pests especially in the earlier crops.
We have also installed plastic mulch on the ground to prevent water evaporation. We also use tunnels or cover netting to help the watermelon take root, especially in the first weeks. Gradually and depending on the temperature of the area, the plantations will be gradually uncovered to make way for harvesting later on.
This is how a week ago we started harvesting the first seedless watermelons of the season. These first pieces come from plantations in the East. They stand out because of their high quality and their strong flavour, a sweet watermelon that is being very competitive in the market.
